An Adventure in the Middle East

Before leaving Portugal I informed some of my friends and colleagues that I would travel soon to Syria and I got more or less the same reaction, a mixture of sincere concern about my safety and admiration for my courageous attitude. So in order to look even bolder, I would say with a smile: “And if I’m lucky I will jump into Beirut!” At that moment I could see eyes opening even more.

Now, it is hard to explain the experience I lived in Syria and in Lebanon, how safe are cities like Damascus and Beirut, in both I walked alone, much safer than Paris, Washington, Johannesburg or Rio de Janeiro.

Also it’s hard to explain how exquisite Syrian and Lebanese cuisine is. I’m so happy that check-in procedures at the airport don’t included the passenger’s weight of the, because I’m sure I gained some weight, such a good food.

And when you join good food with good people you feel great, a found great people both in Syria and Lebanon, believe that any guest in these countries will feel like a king. I hear about their great hospitality but it went beyond my expectations.

During my visit to Syria and Lebanon I had the privilege to deliver training and to do book presentations to great participants. There are some people that I have to recognize for their extra effort to make my visit unforgettable, first of JCI Syria and their fantastic members, members like Mayss that manage all my days and trainings, or Adib who show me the other Syria that we don’t see on TV, or Samer in charge of putting fun into the program, or Shaza and Omar coordinators of JCI Trainer and Presenter.

Recognition is also in order to the great members of JCI Lebanon, like Rania always available to help me with new plans, or Andre that brought me to Lebanon and show me the contrasts of this great country or Rami and Olga that welcome me in their house with a magnificent view over Beirut.

Everywhere I go I say the same, JCI made my world smaller and at the same time gave me a better understanding of the world, you have to go beyond the international news that are served the same way to you no matter where you live, where there are the good guys and the bad guys, but at the end we are all human that have dreams, aspirations and deserve a better world. I believe that the first step of getting to that better world is to know each other better, so travel as much you can, go to Syria and Lebanon you will not regret for sure :-)

Promoting across Romania the Romanian Edition of my Networking Book

Last April, because of the Icelandic ash cloud, I couldn’t go to Romania to participate in person on the launching of my Networking Book in person. Nevertheless thanks to support of JCI Targu Mures I was present at the first launching of the Romanian edition of my book using Skype.

This time there was no ash cloud on sight and I manage to do several presentations and seminars in the two main cities in Romania, Bucharest and Iasi.

In Bucharest I counted with the support of Mihaela Stroe, Cornel Costea, my publisher Rentrop&Straton and the great leader of JCI Targu Mures, Laszlo Pacso, among others.

In Iasi I counted with the support of Marius Alexas that kindly invited me to be a speaker in his “Fresh & New” conference, Dorina Moisa from Alexander I Cuzu University that organized a very interesting session where I presented for 30 minutes and was overwhelmed by one and half hour of questions.

If I was surprised by so many questions, the next day I got even more surprised at Empower Connect organized by Genoveva Salvaras, where I did the same 30 minutes presentation and got two and half hours of questions. It was a great group so the conversations had to continue over a very nice lunch.

Finally, thanks to JCI Iasi I did a presentation in gala to recognize entrepreneurs for the Iasi region. I’m very proud that in a very small part I took part in this initiative.

Being a speaker with a full room at ASTD 2010 in Chicago

My last ASTD international conference was in 2007, in Atlanta, where I made a presentation about Informal Training, at the time I was one of the few people that presented something about the importance of Informal Training and I was so happy that 120 people were at my presentation.

Now in Chicago, I presented my recent experience with Informal Training, but everything was different, this year Informal Training is a hot topic, most referred as Informal Learning or even Social Learning and my session was full with a queue of people waiting for some opening, so only 216 people were allowed to enter, the session was recorded and I did a Webinar on June 8 as part of the virtual part of the conference in order to reach more people.

Also it was a great opportunity to meet some good friends from Brazil, South Africa, Denmark USA, UK, Philippines… that I haven’t seen for a while, also I had the rare opportunity to talk face to face with speakers like Daniel Pink, Charlene Li, Donald Kirkpatrick, among others.

I got fun, inspirations and more speaking opportunities, so I will be for sure in ASTD 2011 in Orlando.

Official Launch of my Networking Book in Romania

Today, April 22, my Networking book (Networking – Ghidul supravieţuirii profesionale) was officially launched in Romania, in Romanian, during a conference organized by JCI Targu Mures.

Because of the ash cloud, I couldn't travel to Romania to present my book, so we did a press conference and a short presentation through Skype. That meant that I had to be in my office at 06.30 am to establish the connection.

Many thanks to JCI Targu Mures and it's President Laszlo Pacso for all the support and work that made possible publising and lauching my book in Romania. I want to thank Mihaela Stroe and Corneal Costea for their amazing working in promoting my seminars in Romania.

Also many others help this book to be published like: Raul Glogovețan, Simona Karner, Luana Karner, Miruna Marin, Daniela Bostaca, Crina Penteleychuk, Felicia Stoica, Loránd Soares-Szász and Genoveva Salvaras.

I will be in Romania on May 31 to launch my book in Bucharest and deliver seminars. So see you there :-)

Being Visiting Professor at “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University

During the week of 8 to 12 of March I had the privilege to be Visiting Professor to “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” Universtity in Iasi, Romania.
It was a great opportunity to teach young Romanian students of graduate courses of Marketing and Tourism at the oldest University in Romania.

I also deliver a seminar about e-Marketing in partnership with Crilia and Humans. In this point I have to give a special thanks to my good friends Crina Penteleychuk (Crilia) and Felicia and Mihai Stoica (Humans), which manage in a record time, promote and put together a seminar that was a great success.

Of course, I couldn’t go to Iasi without visiting my good friend of JCI Iasi, which received me with much friendship.

And next month I will be back to Romania, this time to Bucharest and Tg. Mures where I will deliver several seminars from e-Marketing to Networking.

Doing JCI Presenter in Milan

On the 12 and 13 of December I had the pleasure to be Head Trainer of JCI Presenter (JCI official course about presentation techniques) in Milan for 16 JCI Italy members.

The course was a success thanks to the quality of the participants, great organization led by Patrizia Roconi (JCI Italy) and my two Assitant Trainers Andrea Parisi (JCI Italy) and Rui Sarmento Santos Clara (JCI Portugal).

Also I had the opportunity to witness the excellent work that JCI Italy did during 2009 under the presidency of Chiara Milani, that will be 2010 JCI Vice-President.

To all my gratitude for make me feel very much at home.

Delivering Training to Young People in Sicily

From 4 to 8 of December I had the privilege to participate as trainer at the Euro-Med Youth Village, in the beautiful city of Ragusa, Sicily, with the support of EU funds.

The trainings were about networking and communication, there were almost 40 participants on this training that came from Malta, Greece, Turkey, Italy and Romania.

I had as colleague in the trainings Alun Hill a British journalist that works with CNN. We work great together.

Finally, I have to give a great thanks Stefania Garrone and her organization team, for inviting me and for the all there effort to make this event a success.

Training at the JCI World Congress in Hammamet, Tunisia

Every year JCI members worldwide meet in one place, this time was between November 16 and 22 in Hammamet, Tunisia.

As always was a great experience where I had the opportunity to deliver training, JCI Trainer, 15 minutes of Fame for Trainers, Self-knowledge and JCI Head Trainer.

Fun and personal development were together in Tunisia.

On the last day I had the opportunity to present my JCI experience to JCI Tunisia members in Tunis.

The Great Romanian Tour

From October 25 till November 4 I had the opportunity to deliver seminars and trainings in Bucharest and in Iasi.

On the October 26 I had a press conference followed by the Art of Networking seminar which was attend by around 70 people.

Two days after I was delivering JCI Presenter in Iasi, where on the 29 I deliver a second Networking seminar to 100 entrepreneurs sponsored by Post Privatisation Foundation of Romania.

Also I had the opportunity to deliver two seminars about Self-knowledge at the JCI Romania National Conference.

Finally on November 2 and 3 I was Head Trainer of JCI Trainer, in Iasi.

It was a great experience thanks to a great organization and great participants. I will for sure repeat great Romanian Tour.

My First Time in Malta

I was between October 14 and 18 in Malta delivering JCI Trainer and my own seminar about “Managing Virtual Teams” and I found great participants very motivated.

Also organization was great, a big thanks to Rachael Blackburn Sciberras for organizing all so well, to my two assistant trainers (Stephen Camilleri e Michael Pedersen), to JCI Malta president Maria Zahra and all the other participants from Malta and Cyprus that created a great learning environment.

The Oktoberfest Experience!

I had the privilege to be one of the trainers at the first Wiesn School, a training event that was organized by JCI Munich, at the wonderful training centre of IHK placed at 35 Km from Munich.

This training event took place from 2 to 4 of October and of course included going to the Oktoberfest and having lots of fun. The training team had also as trainers Iris Barnert (JCI Germany), Martin Hlavacek (JCI Austria) and Per Stiling (JCI Norway).

Iris Barnert was also in charge of the organization with a devoted team, thanks to them the participants and I had a fantastic experience.

So next year you must go to the Wiesn School and feel the great Bavarian hospitality.

Doing training in Denmark

On the 18 of September I had the opportunity to give a seminar about e-Marketing in Aarhus to a very interested audience.

The next day I was very fortuned to be Head Trainer in a great JCI Trainer in Aarhus, thanks to a very committed group of participants that worked long hours to do their best work. Thanks to excellent Assistant Trainers Mikkel Salling and Aldis Alliks (from Latvia) and finally we got a great organizer Per Freitag.

Also it was an opportunity to check the beautiful city Aarhus that will have the 2010 JCI European Conference. I didn’t have much opportunity to see all but I can tell that has a good night life :-)

I end my trip to Denmark in a fabulous way thanks to Mikkel, for the first time in my life I flew a motor glider and it was fantastic, especially landing with no engine running!

Lucky because I got very committed participants, a great team of Assistant Trainers Adam (JCI UK), Melanie (JCI Scotland) and Maggie (JCI Australia).

Also I was lucky because the fine people of JCI Scotland did everything to show me the best that Edinburgh has to offer.

Gala Night at the European Conference in Budapest was fabulous. It was a night full of contacts and a big joy to have one of the members of my training team Elena Beskinskaya from JCI Russia awarded the “Most Outstanding Trainer in Europe” an award that I won in 2008.

Also I had the opportunity to take great photos with friends across Europe and the world.

Living the JCI European Conference Experience

The JCI European Conference Experience has different for me from the previous ones that I attended, because I was in this conference as trainer but also as JCI Training Commissioner for Europe, what gave me an inside look of the making of a conference of this magnitude.

It was for me great to launch my video tips for trainers project among all trainers in Europe.

Almost 2,500 people attend this conference in the beautiful city of Budapest, a city well prepared to receive visitors. Also JCI Hungary did a great work in the organization of this big event, from them I got the best of cooperation and friendship.

Also it was a great opportunity to meet friends from all over the world that came to Budapest to celebrate the international values of JCI and also to meet in a very good social program, that started with a great Hungarian night, passed by Serbian and Danish night, followed by a very original German night and closed by a impressive Gala Night.

I’m very happy take part in the JCI European Conference that will be held in Budapest between June 10 and 14. I will be present as trainer and as JCI Training Commissioner for Europe, having among others the responsibility being the chairman of the Trainers Forum that will be held on June 13.

This conference will be a great opportunity to meet many, many friends from JCI from all over Europe and some even from outside Europe, getting that wonderful global felling that you only get in JCI.

First JCI Trainer in Portugal: Moment of Joy

On May 23 and 24 I had the honour of being Assistant Trainer of Walter Labres for the second time in two weeks in JCI Trainer, held in Carcavelos (Lisbon area), an official course of JCI that aims to train trainers. My friend Ronald Goovaerts was the other Assistant Trainer.

The quality of the participants was very impressive, creating great learning experience; they really deserve being the first JCI Trainer graduates in Portugal.

With this course I put together all the conditions to be Head Trainer of JCI Trainer, what is for me a great joy.

Being Head Trainer at JCI Presenter in Porto

Training in Sibiu for JCI Romania

Speaking at the 5th Global Conference & Exhibition of ASTD South Africa

From April 21 till April 23 ASTD South Africa held in Cape Town its Global Conference & Exhibition, around 250 participants converged to hear a great group of South African and foreigner speakers, in which I had the privilege to be included.

The conference had a brilliant organization that even had to handle the challenge of a general election in South Africa, right in the middle of the conference days.

I made a presentation to more than 120 people about Informal Training that caught much attention and questions during and after the session.

My friends Juanita and Robin Probart were great hosts to me, with them and another speaker from the Philippines, Moje Ramos-Aquino, I had the opportunity to visit wonderful places like the Cradle of Humankind, Pilasnesberg National Park, Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope and Table Mountain.

As a Portuguese Cape Town has a special meaning because it was discovered by the Portuguese sailor Bartolomeu Dias in 1487, opening the way for the famous trip of Vasco da Gama to India in 1498.

South Africa is a country that is full of amazing surprises that deserves not only a visit, but several visits, because of its diversity and dimension.

Today I have a long trip. Start from Lisbon and now I’m at the new Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport waiting for my flight to Johannesburg. I only have to wait for 5.5 hours.

Training Networking in Freiburg

To finish a great March I did my Networking training to JCI Freiburg (Germany), it was a opportunity to meet members of JCI of Switzerland, Germany and France.

It was a fun training with a very good social program that allow me to live the history and tradition of Freiburg.

My host Uli Wiener and family were very kind in having me at their home. I believe that I will return to Germany for trainings again this year.

After a wonderful adventure in Mongolia that was extend because of cancellation of my flight to Beijing, I finnally arrived to Frankfurt for a breakfast appointment with my friend Andreas.

To my surprise Andreas was not alone, Kai from Norway was also there and also join us our friend Anke. It was a typical JCI reunion, somewhere in the world, with a lot of friendship.

Delivering Traininig to two Major Mongolian Companies

It was quite an experience to deliver training to two major Mongolian Companies in the same day, NewTel (mobile communications and Internet) and APU (beverages).

Both companies sent to my Networking top and middle management and it was a great success.

I specially liked the experience of delivering training in a Ger (traditional nomadic house) in APU company. This Ger was the same used by the Mongolia's President to welcome the US President.

First JCI Presenter in Mongolia Ever

The next honor and challenge was to be Head Trainer of the first JCI Presenter course in Mongolia that was held in Ulan Bator, on March 17, to a class of 18 ambitious JCI members of several LOMs.

I had as Assistant Trainer my friend Amga, by the way a great Mongolian trainer, that puts much of his professional experience into the training, creating a unique experience.

Also my friends Amca and Bayan of JCI Mongolia gave a great logistical support creating the conditions for a very successful course.

7th Presidential Academy of JCI Mongolia

Being Head Trainer of the 7th Presidential Academy of JCI Mongolia was for me an honor and a challenge. The academy was held on March 14 and 15 in the mining city of Erdenet.

Thanks to great participants, excellent team of Mongolian trainers and a very professional organization team this Academy was a success.

I had the opportunity to meet JCI Vice-President Farzana, from Bangladesh, that also deliver training during the academy.

A train trip in Mongolia

I arrived to Ulan Bator at 16.00 and after a great dinner with my good friend Batbayar at 20.00 I was already in train to Erdenet, where the JCI Mongolia Presidential Academy.

Erdenet is a mining city 400 Km north of Ulan Bator, close to the Russian border. It was 12 hours train trip with a lot of talks to pass the time and with a great reception at the end.

A dream coming true – Training in Mongolia

I'm writing this post on the plane from Lisbon to Frankfurt and I can't wait to arrive in Mongolia tomorrow and meet many of my Mongolian friends.

This will be an opportunity to deliver JCI Presenter course and also some of my trainings at the Presidential Academy.

Also I will not miss the chance of learning even more of the history and culture of Mongolia, a country that once dominate a vast continent.

JCI Presenter and JCI Trainer in Vilnius

I can say that I feel very much at home in Vilnius, being this the 7th time that I’m here and I my respect for the Lithuanians grows in every trip that I make to their beautiful country with an remarkable history of courage.

This time I had the privilege of being Head Trainer of JCI Presenter, having as Assistant Trainers my good friends Harald from Estonia and Aldis from Latvia. The participants did a fantastic job and I loved their commitment.

On the weekend was time to do JCI Trainer, now having Per from Norway as Head Trainer and Harald from Estonia and Zanas from Lithuania as my colleagues as Assistant Trainers. It was a great learning experience for me and again we had top level participants.

In the words of a famous movie character “I’ll be back!” :-)

March 3 - JCI Achieve in Panevėžys, Lithuania

This was my third time in Panevėžys and again to deliver training, but this time as Head Trainer of JCI Achieve.

This course uses discussions and case studies to understand and establish the JCI local organization’s identity, its purpose and what to do to accomplish JCI’s Mission, effectively adopt and use recognizable and appreciated activities, understand the existing demographic groups and their characteristics and how to build a attractive organization that will bring in new members who are looking for the development opportunities and want to create positive change as active citizens.

And 10 JCI members of JCI Lithuania came to Panevėžys to invest their time and effort in a cold Tuesday to help JCI Lithuania to an even better organization.

I have to thank all participants for their commitment, Jolanta Bubneliene for the local logistics and also my unstoppable project director Aurelija Muzaite-Zavanelli.

JCI European Presidents Meeting in Portugal

In 2006 in Vilnius as president of JCI Portugal I had a dream, to host a EPM in Portugal in the near future. In 2008, Krakow we won the bid to host EPM 2009 in Estoril, Portugal.

For me it was a great pleasure to host so many JCI friends in Portugal, to have the opportunity to show the potential that we have in Portugal, but also to give JCI Portugal member a flavor of the international brotherhood that exists in JCI.

From the participants we receive many kind words about words, namely from my good friend JCI World President Jun Sup Shin, that had several gestures of great sympathy toward JCI Portugal and myself.

I will never forget that he gladly accepted my invitation to be present in the first graduation of a JCI Presenter course in Portugal, in which I had the honour to be Head Trainer, with my two good friends Alis Allikis (JCI Latvia) and Ronald Goovaerts (JCI Portugal).

New Training for New Times

As a trainer I’m always searching for new methods to be more effective. One area was a big challenge for me, technical training, mainly on the “how to do” perspective.

I'm accustomed to see training rooms filled with computers and people learning 5 to 10% of they were taught and because of that they would receive a manual that they wouldn’t see anymore.

On the other hand, companies have their knowledge dispersed between staff members and have to send people to external training when they have the knowledge inside that they seek outside.

After more than three years of research and tests I developed a methodology that I named Informal Training, which increases the training effectiveness, cutting costs dramatically.

The results are, to say the least, spectacular.

The beauty of Informal Training is that I can put working in any organization, in part of the world in a very short time.

Between November 28 and December 4 I was back in Lithuania for several seminars and contacts with some training Lithuanian companies. For some of these contact I had the help of the Portuguese Embassy in Vilnius.

I took the opportunity to revisit the centre of Vilnius, a city that I recommend, and meet friends from JCI Lithuania.

In a event outside of Vilnius, organized by JCI Lithuania, I had a lot of fun, namely with a seminar about the art of flirting.

Big Conference of ASTD in Poland

The biggest event of ASTD in Europe was held between November 24 and 27, in Warsaw, Poland, with around 150 speakers and almost 2000 participants.

For ASTD Portugal, I was present, speaking about informal training that generated a great interest because the room filled completely.

This conference was organized by my good friends of ASTD Poland and partners.

Also I had the opportunity to have lunch in a true Portuguese restaurant with my friend Pawel and his lovely wife.

It was an honour to receive the award of Most Outstanding Trainer 2008 at the World Congress; this award distinguishes one trainer in a universe of 10.000 trainers in 115 countries. This was moment of joy for me and for JCI Portugal.

Also I have to thank the national organizations of Estonia, Romania, Turkey, Russia, Iceland and Italy that gave me the opportunity to give trainings in their countries.

A very special thanks to JCI Lithuania for the several training projects we did together, that were awarded with two European Awards.

The group was big, 21 people, being 18 from India, 1 from Martinique, 1 from Denmark and 1 from the Netherlands.

After a short stop in Portugal, after coming from Iceland, it was time to fly to JCI Italy conference that was held in the beautiful Varese area, near Milan.

Varese, a region with big aeronautic tradition, gave the theme to the conference, even the two trainings that I delivered, Networking and e-Marketing, follow the theme.

The reactions to the seminars were great, with many requests to do it again in other regions of Italy and Switzerland.

Being at the Most Northern JCI National Conference

It was great pleasure to discover a wonderful country that is Iceland, a country that only is cold in its name, because the water is hot and the people are warm.

Also it was a great experience to be the invited trainer for the National Conference JCI Iceland a true Viking event, full of opportunity to meet all of my Icelandic friend, that was held between the 26^th and 28^th of September.

I delivered my Networking training with great results, thanks to the help of two good friends, Aldis from Latvia and Arni from Iceland, which gave me the privilege of having them as my assistant trainers.

Also a special thanks to Helgi (the best tour guide in Iceland), Anna Maria and Brigit for creating a great Icelandic experience for me.

Being Head Trainer at the Russian Leadership Academy

Great Experience!!!

Is how I can define the feeling of being at the Russian Leadership Academy, as head trainer. This Academy was held between the 13 and 18 of July at the resort on peninsula Urman, on Pavlovskoye lake 100 km from city called Ufa, in the middle of Russia. By the way a beautiful place almost untouched by man.

I had many different experiences, like livening the forest in a Yurta (traditional house of the Republic of Bashkortostan), swimming in lake, walking on fire, giving training to a Russian audience, experience the regional cuisine and many others.

For the almost 50 participants, the academy was a big success, thanks to the organization team, trainers and of course to Galina Mushtrieva founder an soul of this academy.

On my way back I had the opportunity to meet in Moscow members of JCI Capital (Moscow) that made us a short and interesting tour of downtown Moscow.

A Wonderful Gala Night

A Gala Night with so many friends, after great trainings, receiving two awards and the ITF plaque is a dream that came true.

In the photo beside you can see my wonderful training project directors from left to right: Aurelija Muzaite-Zavanelli (JCI Lithuania), Ela Burcu Ucel (JCI Turkey) and Eda Suurorg (JCI Estonia).

To make things even better during the Gala, the Portuguese team won the match against Turkey in the Euro 2008, which made me loose the rest of voice I had from the awards.

Gala night in Bursa

Because of an early flight I didn't enjoyed the gala night until the end, nevertheless I can say that I got the best good-bye ever with a real tunnel of people shouting my name and saying good-bye.

Also the President of JCI Turkey Alp Limoncuoglu and project director Ela Ucel were very kind to me. My thanks go to them for inviting me to this wonderful opportunity to meet in action the members of JCI Turkey.

A new training project with JCI Estonia was initiated in Tartu University on the March 12, 2008; around 40 people attended the Networking training.

After I had lunch with my project director Eda Suurorg, who promise me “the true Estonian winter” with temperatures of minus 20º and fail completely, because not only I didn’t found any snow the temperature was well above 0º.:-)

The presentation of the World Congress in New Delhi was made by the… Portuguese

Abdul Saleem from the organizing committee of the World Congress in New Delhi asked Filipe Carrera from JCI Portugal to present the event in India. This invitation was accepted immediately.

For the General Assembly of the European Presidents of JCI was a surprising moment seeing a Portuguese presenting a Congress India, but it was even more surprising when Filipe Carrera undressed showing the official Congress T-shirt during the presentation.

Our second day is dedicated to how to grow membership of JCI across Europe. First we dealt with past and present situation. We arrive to the nice city of a Krakow in a raining day but in high spirit. Meeting JCI members of Goa

After a fantastic Goan lunch it was time to meet more members of JCI in Goa, for that we went to a city call Ponda, where around 20 member of several Local Organizations of JCI were waiting for us with a surprising program.

First I was invited to honour the JCI plaque at the entrance of the city of Ponda, next we went to retirement home were we gave some happiness, in a form of a distribution of food and sugar to 23 residents of that home in the small village Loutolim.

Finally JCI Ponda organized a dinner party for all the JCI members that came to Ponda to meet us. People treat me so well, it was for me a great emotion that so many members of JCI Goa gave their time to make me feel great in Goa.

Two special words for Sonia Shirsat, which went beyond any expectations to make my staying in Goa memorable and to my good friend Abdul Saleem made such a tremendous effort to meet me in Goa.

Going around in Goa

As soon as I arrived, my good friend Sonia from JCI Ponda (Goa) met me at the hotel, to show me Goa and to explain me everything about this beautiful state.

On the next morning arrived Abdul Saleem former VP of JCI and my colleague at Japan Academy, that came especially to Goa to meet me doing for that an 8 hours train trip. His presence in Goa made me very happy and honored by this token of friendship.

Abdul and my self under Sonia’s guidance did a fantastic tour of the Panaji (capital city of Goa). It was a privilege to have Sonia as our “tour guide” a true Goan with great love and respect for the Goan heritage. Also Sonia’s Portuguese is impressive.

Arriving in Goa

It’s very hard to describe the sensation of arriving in Goa, small state of India that was Portuguese India until 1961.

Being so far from home, seeing some many things written in Portuguese, so many Portuguese monuments and looking and talking to the people, I felt a true connection as a result of 463 years of common history.

Goa is without a doubt a place that deserves to be rediscovered by all, for its natural beauty, history and people. Also I see it as world reference in terms of tolerance and good relations between very different religious communities.

Being at the Asia Pacific HRM Congress in Mumbai

Like in a movie, when I entered for the first the venue of the Congress, the first person that I saw was my good friend Rumi, National President of JCI Bangladesh in 2006, quite a personality in the Congress, being very kind in presenting to everybody in the congress and even advertising my presentation on the last day of the congress.

To receive an award (with people like Bob Pike being one of the awardees with me), doing a presentation that got a lot of positive feed-beak from people of different countries, to enjoy a very professional organization and to meet great people, made my experience a dream come true.

In provisional figures the ASIA Pacific HRM Congress had more than 500 participants from 62 countries over three days. It was such a success that next edition will be called World HRM Congress.

“In Breaks We Trust” a Mumbai Motto

After having my first vegetarian meal with a colleague from JCI Mumbai Jayveer Rachh and his full briefing on the city I was ready for my radical program going around the city in taxi and motorized riquexo

It is a unique experience that is hard to described, let’s say that when you use this means of transportation is like being inside a racing computer game with a great player like my kids, where collisions are avoided in the last second with a tremendous faith in the breaks.

The First Impression of Mumbai

Arriving to Mumbai is by itself an experience, as soon as I came out of the plane you understand that you are really in a different country. Yet you see in small things the connections with the Portuguese. As I connected my cellular an operator of Airtel (Vodafone India) sent me a message because of the roaming, the funny thing was that her name is very Portuguese, like six in ten managers of hotels that I was advice to use by the congress organization.

In this 16 million inhabitants city, what impresses me the most is the huge gap between poor and rich, where the extreme poor are called the “untouchables “.

New Adventure in India

I’m writing this text while waiting for my flight to Mumbai at Heathrow airport. This time is not only JCI activities I will receive the HR Leadership Award at the Asia Pacific HRM Congress to be held between the 12^th and 14^th of February in Mumbai.

I will take the opportunity to make contacts with JCI India member from Mumbai, Goa and other places of that big country that is India

I will arrive to India, 510 year after the great Portuguese navigator that was Vasco da Gama, actually it was the Portuguese that named it Bombaim (Bombay) because of the good bay. In 1995 it was changed to Mumbai.

I bet some things have change since Vasco da Gama was there. Let’s see!!!

Networking Seminar at Junior Chamber Kaunas

On November 30, Networking Seminar was delivered to 23 participants that were members and non-members of Junior Chamber Kaunas. The 3 hours seminar was held Graiciuno College of Management in Kaunas.

Participation was high. After seminar we were surprised with a tour to two well known institutions in Kaunas: Militaries House and Lithuanian Riflemen’s Union museum.

Both visits were to understand the importance of these two institutions in Lithuanian recent history, namely in resistance against soviet power. I was honoured to sign the guest book in both institutions.

Seminar and great Reception in Siauliai Romuvos Gymnasium

Right after the Networking seminar in Siauliai University Gymnasium, the same seminar by Filipe Carrera was made in Siauliai Romuvos Gymnasium (also, a pre-college education institute).

Like the seminar before, it was also part of a JCI Sostine project “School of Success”.

About 70 participants attended this seminar that started in very warm atmosphere. Again, the trainer and the seminar organisers from JCI were invited to the gymnasium director’s office to have coffee with gymnasium authorities and to receive warm congratulations and invitations to come again and make more seminars in the near future when possible.
